Safety Planning - after you leave an abusive relationship

Leaving an abusive relationship does not always mean an end to the violence. Many people experience abuse from former partners (this is called post separation abuse). Here are some ideas to keep you as safe as possible.

MOBILE
– If possible, change your number.
– Screen calls with an answering machine
– Don’t answer calls from numbers you don’t know.
– Save all messages that are threatening or which violate a domestic violence order.

ADMIN
– Open accounts (bank, household etc..) in your name only.

VARY YOUR DAILY ROUTINE
– change your commute to work and don’t visit the same bank or shop too often.

MEET IN PUBLIC
– If you have to meet your ex-partner for access (a visit with the children), try to do it in a public place.

CHILDREN
– Prepare your children so they know what to do if someone comes to the house or to school looking for you (or them). Let their teachers know that you are the only one authorised to pick up your children from school.
