If you are in an abusive relationship, ending the abusive behaviour is the responsibility of your abuser, and theirs alone. But, there are a series of actions you can take to help keep yourself safe whether or not you are planning to stay in the relationship.
Here are some of the steps you can take to protect yourself.
- Contact our helpline. Whatever stage you are at, we are here to listen and believe you.
- Meet with one of our outreach team. We will meet you at a time and a location that suits you and help you begin to explore your options.
- Reach out to people you know and trust.
- Talk to a helpline or domestic abuse service like Women’s Aid. Their freephone, confidential helpline is available 24/7 on 1800 341 900.
- Talk to your GP.
- Keep a journal of threatening or controlling behaviour, incidents, assaults. Ensure that this is kept safe.
- Remember to clear your browsing history after visiting this or other domestic abuse websites.
- Make a safety plan, so that you (and your children) know where you can go and how you can get there in an emergency.
If you are in immediate danger, always call the Gardai on 999/112.
